Canadian racer Devlin DeFrancesco will join Carlin’s FIA Formula Three European Championship team for the remainder of the 2017 season commencing this weekend with the ninth round of the season at the Red Bull Ring, Austria. DeFrancesco already has experience racing with the team in the Euroformula Open Championship and will be running a dual campaign for the rest of the season. DeFrancesco will be joined in the Carlin awning by 2017 regulars Lando Norris, Ferdinand Habsburg and Jehan Daruvala.
DeFrancesco joins the team off the back of a strong debut series so far in the Euroformula Open Championship in which he has already secured a brilliant four podiums. His solid season so far sees him sitting fourth overall in the Championship standings and closing the gap to those ahead. DeFrancesco’ s great year so far means he has also positioned himself perfectly to make the move to the FIA Formula Three European Championship for the final two rounds of the season at the Red Bull Ring this weekend followed by the season finale at Hockenheim next month.
The 17 year old has a strong racing background behind him, despite his young age; competing in four championships last season he took race winning success in the F4 British Championship as well as scoring points in the Formula Four Italian Championship and the Toyota Racing Series New Zealand.
DeFrancesco will make his debut at the Austrian circuit this weekend – a track at which he has no race experience meaning the upcoming race meeting will see the Canadian racer taking on a tough challenge around the 4.318km track.
However the task doesn’t faze DeFrancesco who said of the upcoming weekend, “I’m really excited for this opportunity to race in the final two rounds of the FIA Formula Three European Championship; it’s a great Championship and a track I’m really looking forward to racing at. It’s going to be a big challenge for my first weekend in the series however also a good experience for me. I’m aiming for points from this weekend – I’ll be fighting hard for good results and looking for a successful weekend.”
Racing director Trevor Carlin added, “It’s great to have Devlin on board with us in the FIA Formula Three European Championship. He is an extremely passionate racer and puts his all in to everything he races – which he will no doubt do again this weekend in Austria. He’s really growing as a driver and coming in to his own in the Euroformula Open Championship, especially having secured a double podium last time out at Silverstone, so we know that he will be racing hard out there as he makes his debut in FIA Formula Three.”
DeFrancesco will be out on track for the first time during free practice on Friday which gets underway at 13.10 local time.
