Canadian racer Devlin DeFrancesco will move to the Euroformula Open Championship with Carlin for the 2017 season ahead.
DeFrancesco has had a stellar year competing in the Formula Four British Championship with race winning success and spent the season fighting hard for Championship honours in what was a very competitive field. DeFrancesco, who scored a total of three wins, now moves up to Formula Three machinery remaining with Carlin in a switch to the Euroformula Open Championship.
16 year old DeFrancesco will make the move to the European based championship following a strong season of racing in the UK as part of the Formula Four British Championship. DeFrancesco took a fantastic tally of 10 podiums and three wins as the 2016 season progressed – making sure he was a championship front runner. The Canadian racer, in only his first season of single seat racing, has impressed with his speed throughout and is now focused on making the jump to the European championship.
DeFrancesco has also raced this season in the Formula Four Italian Championship in what has been a busy year for the young Canadian. Previous to this, DeFrancesco participated in the in the Ginetta Junior championship as well as gaining vital experience in the Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand while participating in the Carlin Academy.
DeFrancesco said of the upcoming season, “It’s going to be a big step forward but we’re ready for it. We’ll be doing a fair bit of testing before the first race in preparation so I’m really looking forward to it. I have a good plan put in place by my management at XYZ Talents and also at Carlin to ensure that we’ll be competitive and ready for 2017.
“2016 was a great season and we’ll make sure to take the strengths forward for next year keep working hard behind the scenes. Can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
Racing director Trevor Carlin added, “Devlin has been part of the team in one way or another for the past two seasons so we’re delighted to have him on board as the first driver announced in our Euroformula Open line up. Devlin is a fantastic asset to have in any team and will no doubt show himself well from the very start of the 2017 season as he gets to grip with a new car and a new challenge. He’s been working extremely hard this past season in his dual campaign and I can’t wait to see what he is capable of in the Euroformula Open car.”
Defrancesco has had his first taste of the Euroformula Open car and will be out with the team in official pre-season testing in Spain and Portugal throughout December.
