After what has felt like an age, GP3 roars back into action for the final time this weekend (23rd – 25th November). Taking to the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi, Devlin DeFrancesco is looking to end his season on a high.
Offering up a new challenge for the eighteen-year-old, the highly technical track is made up of long straights mixed in with long high-speed turns, accumulating in a notoriously tricky final sector. These contrasting elements make it arguably one of the most mentally demanding on the GP3 calendar. Despite never having visited the Emirati track before, the young MP Motorsport driver feels well prepared from his simulator programme.
“Abu Dhabi is such a cool place and the track looks mega. We’ve done a lot of sim work so I’m feeling prepared and ready to go” - Devlin commented
Keeping himself race-ready during the 54-day gap between races, Devlin re-joined the JDC-Motorsports team for a successful outing in Georgia, US for the Motul Petit le Mans. Despite being only his second ever endurance race, Devlin demonstrated his adaptability and raw talent ending the gruelling 10-hour race 9th overall.
After swapping from FIA F3 to GP3 mid-season, Devlin was well and truly thrown into the deep end coming to the season with zero testing under his belt. However, after entering the world an astonishingly 15 weeks premature as a baby, Devlin has always believed that ‘through adversity comes strength’ and has wasted no time in proving this, improving week on week and coming agonisingly close to points finishes on several occasions.
Reflecting on the year so far Devlin commented:
“The big focus now is trying to finish off the season as high as I can with MP and see what next year brings. I’m really looking forward to ending the season on a high with everyone who has worked hard with me in 2018.’
On track action begins with a practice session on Friday 23rd November.
